PIRA Classification: 5A20.28

Description: Two cans coated with conductive paint represent pith balls. A PVC or acrylic rod is charged up and then brought in contact with the cans. The cans will separate, with the separation distance dependent on the amount of charge accumulated.

Special Instructions: Make sure you hear the build up of charge on the rod. This will be indicated by a crackling noise. Will not work well when humid (beginning of fall semester or summer session). It may take a number of transfers to build up sufficient charge.

Condition: Some what better than normal pithballs. However, their increased mass makes it more difficult to achieve large separation.

Setup time: 1 minute

Safety Issues: None
