PIRA Classification: 7A10.10

Description: An aluminum plate (work function = 4.1 eV) replaces the usual plate on an electroscope. The aluminum plate is charged up using a PVC rod and then discharged by shining an ultraviolet light on the plate. One can also charge the aluminum with a positive rod to show that the scope will not discharge.

Special Instructions: The UV light has two different wavelengths: one will discharge the plate (254 nm), the other (365 nm) won't.

Condition: Good

Setup time: 2 minutes

Safety Issues: Do not shine the light on the students.
